4 Habits for a Mindful Morning Routine

Looking for a way to make getting up easier every day? Try adding any of these three habits to your morning routine to add a sense of peacefulness to your day and help you leap out of bed each day, excited for the new opportunities each new day brings!

  1. Drink water & go for a walk

Each morning, we wake up dehydrated due to the lack of water while we are sleeping. I like to drink water right when I wake up to start rehydrating my body right away and start my day on the right foot. Then, I get outside and go for a walk each morning to get my daily dose of sunlight right away. This can help realign your circadian rhythm and wake your body up. Moving your body helps you start your day energized without caffeine.

  1. Stretch your muscles

Right when I get back from my walk, I start stretching. Walking helps loosen my muscles so I can dive right into my stretches. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that it’s easier to strain my muscles, so stretching is extremely important to me. This helps prepare my body for whatever the day could throw at me and keeps me flexible and limber.

  1. Meditate for at least 5 minutes

After I finish stretching, I open the Calm app and do the daily guided meditation. I like to use the Calm app because it provides a new daily 10 minute meditation each day, which is the perfect length for me. A common misconception about meditation is that you must do it for long periods of time, but research shows that even just 5 minutes of meditation is beneficial to your health.

  1. Write in a gratitude journal

After finishing my meditation, I take out my 5-minute journal. This journal has different prompts about gratitude, goals, affirmations, and more. This helps me get into a peaceful mindset and get ready to tackle the day with my priorities taking center stage. Gratitude has proven to increase happiness and general satisfaction in people’s lives. Try this out to elevate your mindfulness each morning!

Want to finish the year strong? Here are 3 actions to take now!

As we head into the holiday season, most people start to reflect on what they’ve accomplished this year and start to set goals for the next year. Sometimes, looking back on the year can be disheartening. The good news is if you haven’t yet accomplished everything you wanted to accomplish in 2022, there’s still time left! Let’s dive into three actionable steps on how you can finish the year off strong!

1. Mindfulness

Practice spending time in the present moment, undistracted. The only thing in life that we can never buy back is time. Living in the past makes you depressed, as you just continue to rehash things that you cannot change. However, living only in the future brings anxiety, especially if you’re anticipating something stressful. Living in the present is the only way to feel peace. Thoughts drive your emotions, so be mindful of what you fill your mind with, this will control your life. Two ways to help you practice mindfulness are journaling about gratitude and meditating for 5-10 minutes daily with no distractions.

2. Declutter

Decluttering your physical space can help you focus on what’s essential in your life and help you thrive. More things don’t mean that they have more impact. Research shows that clutter leads to decreased focus, confusion, and depression. On the flip side, research also shows that an organized environment can lead to more productivity, reduce stress, and improve your mood. However, decluttering an entire house may be unrealistic. If you cannot tackle the entire house, start with the areas you spend the most time, like your office and your bedroom.

3. Review

Successful businesses listen to employee reviews and product reviews. High-performing athletes listen to their coach’s reviews and watch reviews from their previous games. Apply this same principle to your own life. Before you make a plan for the next year, give yourself a pat on the back for the accomplishments you have achieved in this current year. Then, review where you can improve and how you’d like to change in the new year.

Feeling like quitting? Read this.

The key to not quitting when you’re in the midst of wanting to give up is to have a formula set in stone to come back to and remind you of your bigger goals in life. This can help pick you up on your worst days and set you back on the right path toward accomplishing your goals.

If you know that you’ll have a slammed couple of days this week, then make sure you’re putting a routine in place that makes it easy for you to do the things you need to do in order to work towards your goals. For example, if your goal is to go to the gym every day, then pack your gym bag in advance each night before you go to bed. If your goal is to eat healthier and avoid fast food, make meals in advance, or ensure that you’ll have time to prepare a healthy meal at home so you aren’t tempted to grab fast food instead. If your goal is to save money, then make a budget and put money into savings each week. The most important thing in this situation is to hold yourself accountable, set a system in place, and keep your bigger-picture goals in mind.

Also, it’s important to remember that if you are having an off day and feel like you need to rest, it is not quitting or giving up to listen to your body. Take the extra sleep in the morning, and make a commitment to yourself to make it to the gym the next day. Try not to skip your goals twice in a row, as this can trick your brain into thinking it’s okay to give up and there are no consequences for not sticking to your routine.

Stolen Focus: Why are we constantly distracted?

In today’s phone-centric world, it’s hard to disconnect and live in the present moment. In this blog, I’m going to dive into the reasoning behind why we are so addicted to our phones, and what we can do about it.

What is stealing our focus?

Constant attention-grabbing notifications and apps that are wired to force-feed us content are just two out of a million ways that large corporations are manipulating users and stealing our precious time. Now, why would companies do this? Because the more data they can collect from us, the more data they can sell and profit off of. But what can we do about it?

My personal hack

I think that you do not have to be “all-or-nothing” with your social media or phone usage. I like to keep my phone on do not disturb, and every 3 or 4 hours, I check in to see if anyone needs me or if anything is happening that I can be involved in. This way, I can still be connected to my phone but also live in the present moment and give my full attention to those around me.

Facts to be mindful of

There are tons of statistics out there about the way that our brains are distracted by our phones, but here are a few interesting ones to think about:

  • It takes the average person 23 minutes to get back to the task they were doing when they are distracted.
  • The average sleeper 20-30 years ago got 7-8 hours, whereas now, the average person gets 5-6 hours of sleep.

Both of these facts showcase the impact of phones on our daily lives. It can be hard to disconnect, but putting your phone in the other room while you’re working or when you go to bed can help raise your productivity and sleep quality tremendously.

What we should do now

In order to get to the root of this issue, increase the amount of time spent with loved ones and decrease the amount of time spent on your phone. Strive to do work that is meaningful for you and that gives you a sense of purpose.
